Is the below really true???
I was under the understanding that under the regs that the only the MIN
equipment spelled out for IFR flight is REQUIRED. (aka AI DG TurnCoord, nav
equipment applicable to the flight) Where does it state that if you install
a GPS approach receiver that it has to be signed off by the FAA. I would buy
that for a certified aircraft aka Field approval for an aircraft that does
NOT have an STC for that GPS receiver.

At this time, if you install approach certified GPS equipment in your experimental aircraft, such as a Garmin 430, the FAA must sign it off and the installation must be performed by a certified Avionics shop.  You will receive a 337 form after such an installation.  My avionics shop also hired me for $1 to perform the required accuracy flight tests.
