Ed,

Although I have zero experience with Lycomings, I have run into this problem with auto engines.  Once, the ignition timing was off (retarded too far), and the second time it was a vacuum leak in back of the throttle body.  If the problem isn't in due to fuel particulates, you may want to look for one of these.
