The Commander 112A in which I just finished my Commercial ticket was approved for the BOTH setting in cruise, at least I think it was. We were told (informally) to put it in Left, Right, or Off while parked so that fuel wouldn't siphon from one tank to the other and run overboard. BOTH in flight was just fine, and that's what I did. Always. Plain old Cessna 150-style, OFF on the ground and BOTH in the air.
How they made it work is beyond me. I are just a dumb pylot.
