hi there

A GREAT IDEA
we think nothing of dual navcoms... why not dual ipads!! and much cheaper.
i have multiple ways to keep the ipad charged, including a plug-in that uses AA batteries

BUT
why not just a second ipad. you can load your software on multiple ipads an no additional cost

   YES

I'd rather have two ipads with moving maps than a panel mount tso'd certified expensive small screen that can fail.  They do fail, they need expensive repairs, they need cooling and certification does not prohibit a unit from failing so what are you trying to sell us with that comment?  At least the iPad tells you it needs to get cooled.  How many certification hours and dollars would it take to make that change to a Garmin unit or Chelton unit today?

The iPad is indeed a flightworthy item and now standard issue (in duplicate) on a number of airlines.

(cracked screen ipad still working marvellously with GPS, 3G appr charts, low/hi IFR charts, VFR charts and all the for about $300)

Yeah...and some folks wonder why it is so expensive and takes so long to create flight worthy electronics....
