Hi Colyn –
It shouldn’t cost that much for an
O2 refill setup. My local supplier said they couldn’t sell me a tank
outright (something about NY State regulations). He suggested I find one on
Ebay. So I found one for $50 that was left unclaimed at a construction work
site. The welding supplier charged me a one-time fee of $24.50 to have it
hydrostatically tested (since it was an unknown tank), and another $44.65 to
exchange it for a full tank. Since I gave them a tank, there is no rental fee
or deposit required (although they do own the tank in my hangar). Now I’ll
just exchange it as needed for a full one for $45.
I didn’t look into a two tank setup.
We’ll see how many fillups I get from the single big (249 cubic foot) tank.
The big tank comes with just a shutoff valve. The only other required valves
and gauges are on MH Oxygen’s transfill adapter.

seriously cheaper.
I have a 1600 psi system in the cessna and am trying to get setup to
deal with that. I'm told it's over $1000 to get two cylinders to rent
plus the valves and meters. (not including the mh transfill thing)
Is that right?
Anyway, interesting looking at your ox setup. That's a nice place
for the tank.
I put one in the Lancair just for backup. Being pretty ultra
conservative I
- sized it for 3-4 people 35 minutes (my max glide time from fl280 to
fl100). don't remember the math but I ended up with a KF-011
- constant flow to avoid failure modes of additional equipment
- kept it in the cabin because I didn't want the valves on the other
side of the pressure bulkhead
- left the meter on the bottle to avoid possible leaks in the meter
pressure line (meter appears between the shoulders of the two back seats)
- put in the MH remote valve just because I can't reach that far.

I bought the pricey TR-95b transfiller
($300) plus the TA-380s adapter ($95) from MH Oxygen and obtained a big
cylinder to use as an exchange at my local welding supply. The full cylinder
from the welding supply shop also only had about 2000psi. So I’m not
getting full capacity out of my system, but it’s still cheaper than
filling up at an FBO ($70 at KGON).

Adam,
Looks interesting. I'm wondering if you have figured out how to
transfill that bottle yet?
I have access to big cylinders but they have less than 2000 psi.
