As far as documents required for flight in Canada we have the acronym AROWILLI  ;    Airworthyness cert, radio licence, operating handbook, weight and balance, proof of insurance, Pilots Log book/Aircraft jounrey log book, Licences/medical cert and for the life of me I can't remember what the last 'I' is. It's been a few years since I had my private chechride and haven't thought about it much since..   You also need all the charts for your route of flight and a flight plan if you are traveling more than 25nm from your point of T/O.

If you get ramped by a Transport Canada official this is what you need...  I won't jinx myself by speaking much more about all this, other than to say it is relatively unlikely you will get ramped [they are all pretty good guys]..  btw T.C. is the same as your FAA.

The Customs guys in the US will request proof of insurance more than the Canadian guys.. as well as medical and licences.  I can't actually remember the last time I had a Canadian customs officer ask me for anything other than a Passport. Of course, being Canadian the roles may be reversed for a US Citizen.

When fling to Canada some years ago I had been told that proof of insurance noting that it is valid in Canada is required.
When I presented the document with the others the customs agent was mildly surprised, saying that not one in 50 pilots from the US carried the document.
I do not know if is still officially required.

First step is to get through the paper work:
airplane radio license
pilot radio license
eapis registration
eapis flight plan.

....way less stressful if you start early.

then you need charts. foreflight has a $120 add-on for that.

My wife and I are considering a flight from Manassas, VA to Eagle River, AK to Portland, OR and back to VA sometime in the next 6-8 weeks in our LNC2-360. I've never flown over Canada and know little or nothing about their airspace. I know a few of you have done this so it seemed like a good place to ask for advice as my first step in researching this adventure.
