I think I have made some Chelton fans mad LOL
So let me explain the reason why I am thinking of doing the upgrade to the Garmin G3X.
I flew with the Chelton IFR, I had training IFR, under the hood, real IMC (and I mean real heavy IMC including turbulence LOL) and the Chelton does really good, but now that I also installed the GTN750 I miss that I cannot put flight plans into the GTN750 and it will not transfer to the Chelton.
So right now I have 2 GPS/VOR installations that can steer the TruTrak Sorcerer using a toggle switch.
Now putting 2 flight plans into 2 different systems doesn't make a lot of sense and can be really stressful when ATC ask you to change the plan (as they always do LOL), or flying the Garmin and then ATC ask you to head 30' to the left for spacing…(switch back to trk, make sure that trk is heading the right direction, set trk 30 degrees to whatever direction, and than .…..you get the picture right, too many things to do, so too much time having your head in the cockpit while you should look more outside :)
So right now I am flying the Chelton, IFR and use the Garmin to show pretty pictures LOL
-- Ronald 67 hours and counting….
Ps I do have the certified Chelton and WSI for any takers ;)~
Ron, You are one of many guys that I have seen with this issue. It is not the equipment it is the training or lack of it. How many hours of training have you put in with an instructor learning to fly the Chelton? If flew Cheltons for many years --they are a joy to fly IFR. You just need a good Chelton instructor. It is much cheaper than a panel swap. Have you flown a Garmin G3X before? Same issue ..trainig. You cannot just buy one of these technical wonders and jump in..... Jeff

Subject: [LML] Chelton??and more... Hello guys
Well you perhaps did see the picture of my new panel, and it really looks good,
but after flying with it hard IFR I have to admit that my currency on the
Garmins is better than this from the Cheltons. Also to new Garmin GTN750 does
not talk to the Chelton (in other words, you can put a flight plan in both systems and can switch between the 2 systems for your autopilot).
So I am thinking of selling my Chelton (3 screen system, including the WSI module) and getting either the Garmin G500 or a couple of Garmin G3X screens.
Now I asked an avionics shop what my chelton would cost, and he told me that
this is at least 60k. But I know I will not get 60k back for it right now, but
if someone is interested than make me an offer I cannot refuse and I will get
the Chelton out of my plane and start working on my panel again lol
== Ronald >65 hours and counting
ps Stuff I really like about the chelton is the VFR approach, also the HITS is
pretty good, the engine monitor is very clean and clear.
