Gents:
My experience with HPAT has been very positive. Monday and Tuesday of this week, I hammered out my HPAT training for Insurance, a Biennial Flight Review, and an Instrument Proficiency Check. I worked with HPAT's Pat Franzen, who in addition to being a really nice guy, is an expert and knowledgeable pilot and instructor. Far more importantly, a large part of Pat's 11,000 hours of flying have been in Lancairs.
His time in Lancair aircraft is what sets him apart as a trainer and, I believe makes HPAT very special. Guys like Pat don't just teach you to generically fly generic airplanes. They teach you to fly Lancairs, with all their associated instrumentation and issues. For me personally, this is super valuable. I can do things with my avionics today that I didn't know could be done 3 days ago. In addition to airplane and systems and avionics knowledge, guys like Pat have seen things go wrong, repeatedly, in these high tech, complex, leading edge aircraft. We get to learn, once again, from their Lancair specific knowledge. We can benefit from the scary things they have been through. It's a huge benefit in my mind. John Hafen

Kevin,
I assume that you will be getting your instrument ticket thru HPAT as well.
You do realize that an ordinary, run of the mill, FAA certificated
instructor will not be qualified to adequately instruct you in instrument
flying if you plan to use that training in a Lancair. These Lancair planes
are so different from an ordinary plane that it takes a super special
instructor to prevent your imminent death in one of them!
There is the possibility though, that you could get an ordinary, run of the
mill, FAA certificated instructor and pay him about 3 or 4 times the going
rate for the instruction and you would be OK.
Just my opinion on all this BS. YMMV.

Subject: [LML] Re: Transfer Of Ownership (Inspections, Training..)
My feeling is that perhaps the training requirement helps Lancair
deflect lawsuits and helps them be in a stronger position when sued. My
opinion is that the training and the inspection help create a paper
trail that helps satisfy the jurors, judges and lawyers. It can't hurt
to have it if someone brings a suit against you or your estate. Also, I see it has giving insurance companies more reason to continue to
insure us as a group. I know it is expensive, believe me, I'm coming to the end of my build
and with insurance and training I'm looking at spending $15k (I still
need to get my instrument ticket). It isn't pleasant, but Peter and his
merry band of trainers are worth every penny in my opinion. I'm glad we
have them and I don't have a problem paying for their experience and
knowledge. You can't get a better mentor. Even though we live in a far more civilized time, it is still survival
of the fittest. So, be fit, and survive, and be thankful that people
out there have made it their mission in life to help others survive.
Don't stop learning and don't become resistant for paying for the best
knowledge and training you can acquire. It's one of the ways we can
keep it around.
Just my $0.02 worth...
Kevin
