Howdy all. Been off galivanting for the last two weeks or so, so this is a
late response to the subject.
I like the small horizontal stab.
N235SP is an early 235 (hull # 52) with a slightly warmed O-235-L2C on which
the original horizontal stab has been just peachy-keen for over 500 hours of
flying. This airplane has had it's envelope fully expanded to about 5 - 8
MPH IAS beyond redline at about 100 ft MSL (yes, it was done in very small
increments) without even the beginning hint of a problem.
It has been flown heavy ;-) at or near the aft CG with no problem. I have
never run out of elevator and I cross the numbers at around 85 MPH IAS on
landing. Sure, I have a lot of up-trim dialed in at that time but always
have had plenty of elevator to flare as my speed decays even further at
touch-down.
I'm not willing to perform surgery on my Lancair because some Aussie suits
felt the original stab didn't meet some arcane rule.
Cheers,
Dan Schaefer
