Chris,
Very very good points. I had not considered that.
Here is an idea, I will make a fitting that screws into the oil check hole that has a hard line coming out the bottom that goes near the bottom of the reservoir kind of like a straw. The top of that fitting would have screw on fitting for the return line like an NPT or pipe thread that I would connect via nylaflow line to my new 3 way valve. That way the fluid can run either way without introducing air. I would make a small dip stick that passes through this fitting to check the oil level.  I would of course vent the reservoir with a very tiny hole in that same fitting.
I believe all this could be done with a custom fitting, return line and upgraded 3 way valve.
That sounds like too simple a solution to long standing chronic problem.

Thoughts?

Randy.

Randy,
Interesting idea.  I'll give that one some thought.  Another way around the "gear won't come up" problem is to add an override switch on the panel.  All you need is a jumper across the pressure switch to force the pump on.  I added these for both up and down when we were using an older generation switch.  These had a history of sticking closed.  For the pumps that won't bleed down both sides with the conventional dump valve open, a three way valve might be the answer.  A low pressure relief valve might be neede in that line so you don't drain parts of the system and reintroduce air beyond the dump valve.  You could also submerge the return outlet inside the reservoir.
