Rob Wolf,
One solution for the bolts you need to secure is to use drilled bolts and castle nuts with a cotter pin -- You won't lose the nut. The only loose nut in my plane is the one behind the stick.
I am the one who used 1/8 inch plexiglass(cut the same size as the stainless) as a firewall mockup and transfer template between the firewall and the engine mount (engine hanging from the ceiling with the mount attached), using the 6 mount bolt holes for alignment. You can try firewall mounted components while the plastic is on the engine mount, mark and drill, check and then transfer to the stainless and thence to the firewall. I used many nutplates mounted on the backside of the firewall (especially in the header tank area) and castle nuts for some things. Nothing has fallen off yet! I only used 2 layers of fibrefrax since that would be adequate protection with the heavy stainless and without the extra thickness.
I did use area washers at the engine mount locations and NOTE: I still had to re-torque the mount bolts (80 hours) -- Its' amazing what heat and vibration can do to wood and fiberglass in a short time.
