When flying between the US and Canada, I never [or VERY rarely] get assigned a
new code. I've never heard of it being a requirement. About 90% of my trip's are
across the border one way or another.

I have flown over Detroit City (DET) on my way to the Chesapeake and
asked for a transponder code to overfly Canada. DET said that they
were to busy and handed me off to the Windsor controller. The Windsor
controller said that they didn't assign transponder codes.
Oh Well... so much for trying to follow the rules.

Further FYI, the airspace over Canada is definitely Canadian and to  my knowledge requires a flight plan and squak code for  international over-flights (that’s how I always fly over it).   However, on several occasions when I’ve flown direct from Detroit  to Buffalo (over Canada) at night, I wasn’t handed over to a  Canadian controller – just stayed with Cleveland Center who covers  those Canadian sectors.
