Prop departure also can occur with the prop intact, as in the case of the prop hub unwinding due to a previous ground strike.  This may even be the most frequent scenario.  I, too, would like to hear more details, but for the time being, we should be cautious in blaming the prop itself, especially in view of the pilot smelling hot odor before the departure--he may have been smelling hot oil escaping  a damaged seal.

I am sorry to hear of his misfortune.  I am impressed that he landed his disabled plane from IMC.
