My primary flight instructor drilled into me a (what I consider to be) great
way to handle the "unusual." He told me that whenever something unexpected
happens inflight, the first thing you should do is wind the clock. (I
understand many of you have the great electro-whizzy boxes with a built-in
clock that doesn't require winding--try combing your hair, or scratching
your... well, you get the picture, take a pause.) There are few situations
that require an instantaneous response; most situations will benefit greatly
from a few seconds of thought by the pilot before he/she acts.
