He told me that whenever something unexpected happens inflight, the first thing you should do is wind the clock. (I understand many of you have the great electro-whizzy boxes with a built-in clock that doesn't require winding--try combing your hair, or scratching your... well, you get the picture, take a pause.) There are few situations that require an instantaneous response; most situations will benefit greatly from a few seconds of thought by the pilot before he/she acts.
