It must be stressed here that in an off airport landing, what typically kills is the relative acceleration of the body before striking something inside the airplane. 5 point harnesses are a superior starting point, as they mitigate the "submarining" that happens without the crotch strap. We need to look no further than Ron Brice's accident for a demonstration of the effectiveness of the 5-point. That aside, if you are going in somewhere, get your belts AS TIGHT AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE! With the adrenaline pumping that should be enough to almost weld yo to the seat...which GREATLY enhances your chances of survival...and reduces the chance of your head becoming a bowling ball in the cockpit.
