I just found out that the Lancair IV that crashed in Michigan was in a previous accident on May 28th 2001. In that accident the TSIO 550 failed due to the starter adapter shaft breaking, causing all of the oil to be lost thru the exhaust pipes. The aircraft (N707SH) made a forced landing and experienced extensive damage, including a broken wing. (NTSB report DEN01LA103). The aircraft was built by Steve Hall in Ypsilanti Mich. in 2000. The aircraft apparently was sold to the present registered owned Ward Synthesis. I wonder if the previous accident had anything to do with this terrible accident.
