I just completed replacing the GM28 strut again as a result of failure to
pass the gear free-fall test.  This one I replaced lasted about 6 years
which is considered to be a good/normal life time for these parts per Vern
P.  I was wondering what service life other LNC2 flyers are getting out of
these struts.
Also, I was thinking that there must be a better way to insure that this
part is working when and if you really need it.  The monthly free-fall test
and the annual inspection are fine but these tests do not insure that the
part will not fail just before your hydraulic or electrical system decides
to fail.  In which case -- gear up landing.
One possibility - say do your monthly free-fall tests at a higher air speed
than you would use in an actual emergency rear extension.  For example, do
the free-fall tests at 120 MPH and if you have a real emergency slow down to
85 or 90 MPH before you open that bypass valve.  It seems that this would
improve your chances.
Any comments?
