ES builders,
based on the specs on the Lancair website, I compiled
a list of characterists comparison ES vs Super ES:
Useful load: ES 100 pounds more (8.3% more than Super)
Cruise typical: ES ~ 26.5 mph slower (11.9% slower than Super)
Service ceiling: same
Takeoff distance: ES 200 feet longer (33.3 % longer than Super)
Landing distance: same
Fuel comsumption: ES ~ 4gph less (30.8% less than Super)
Max. range: ES 170 sm (13.3% farther than Super)
Rate of climb: ES 300 fpm slower (19.4% slower than Super)
Now, useful load, fuel consumption, and maximum range are
better on the less powerful version. Rate of climb and takeoff
distance are probably less important characteristics. This
leaves us with a meager 12 % penalty on cruising speed,
when choosing the less powerful option.
However, when looking on Marv's builder list, I don't see a single
instance where a builder chose the Continental IO-360-ES
powerplant. Gentlemen, can you tell me what I, who just
obtained his Private, am missing ? Why is the overwhelming
majority going for the more powerful option ? There must be
information outside the specs that needs to be taken into
consideration I would think. thanks,
