Question--was this filter added to the builds later than my kit No. 53, or is
the filter in the hydraulic pump itself?
David Jones
David, The filter is listed as an option in the Lancair Accessories Catalogue. It is not included in the current building manual, but many builders are installing it. I noted that it did not include a bypass and considered fabricating my own--fairly easy to do with a small in-line check valve--but anticipated the "failure mode" to be exactly what another builder described--slow degradation in performance, and workable. Specifically, operation of the gear and flaps will become sluggish as the filter plugs, giving me the opportunity to clean it--or at least determine the specific cause. I installed fuel filters on each wing feed line just behind the main spar web for similar reasons--to catch the small amount of junk that would otherwise foul an injector, or in this case--wear out the hydraulic pump faster. In spite of the LML post and subsequent recommendation, I still think such filters are a good investment. There are several alternatives to improve the safety and reliability of filter systems, but throwing away the filter element is at the bottom of that list.
