David Jones David, The filter is listed as an option in the Lancair Accessories Catalogue. It is not included in the current building manual, but many builders are installing it. I noted that it did not include a bypass and considered fabricating my own--fairly easy to do with a small in-line check valve--but anticipated the "failure mode" to be exactly what another builder described--slow degradation in performance, and workable. Specifically, operation of the gear and flaps will become sluggish as the filter plugs, giving me the opportunity to clean it--or at least determine the specific cause. I installed fuel filters on each wing feed line just behind the main spar web for similar reasons--to catch the small amount of junk that would otherwise foul an injector, or in this case--wear out the hydraulic pump faster. In spite of the LML post and subsequent recommendation, I still think such filters are a good investment. There are several alternatives to improve the safety and reliability of filter systems, but throwing away the filter element is at the bottom of that list.
