How about infant mortality.  One of mine was bad right out of the box.  The crimp holding the coil wire had actual severed the wire.
Another famous cause is to keep the solenoid energized too long.  This can happen if the pump breaker is pulled while the solenoid coils still gets power.
If there is any question, the rivets are easily drilled out in order to a look.

Not sure if it was the orientation of the relays or simply age.
In any event, new relays will be installed in the morning and their orientation will be reversed.
