I had the same problem with the starter adapter on a Cont IO-550N
This happend at 50 hours and then again at 450 hours
In order to replace the adpter I proceded as follow :
Hoist the engine
Removed the 4 bolts attaching the engine mount to the firewall
Remove the bolts attaching the nosedoor to the engine mount
Pull the engine 2 inches forward from the firewall
Remove the starter side way
Remove the adapter (slip it off aft side)
Then Install the new adapter

Best luck

Subject: [LML] starter drive problem TSIO550

I know there was some discussion a while back about starter drive issues, but I can't find any specifics.  I've developed a problem where the starter slips and won't engage, so I suppose I'm a victim of the TCM problem at 400hr TT.  Is is possible to remove the adapter without moving the engine forward?  I have an A/C pump on the back of the engine too, so it's very packed behind the engine.  I'm not even sure what to remove.  Anyone have some ideas to make this as easy as possible?   Any photos?
Thanks

Ron
