Also had to replace my starter drive on an IO-550 in a Legacy.
Unfortunately, engine mounts had to be loosened and engine swung forward.
Apparently, different starters vary in their tendency to kill
the starter drive adapter. My understanding is that the Iskra is the worst and
that the old Prestolite is the best. Allen Barrett can probably give you
further information.

Subject: [LML] starter drive problem TSIO550
I
know there was some discussion a while back about starter drive issues, but I
can't find any specifics. I've developed a problem where the starter
slips and won't engage, so I suppose I'm a victim of the TCM problem at 400hr
TT. Is is possible to remove the adapter without moving the engine
forward? I have an A/C pump on the back of the engine too, so it's very
packed behind the engine. I'm not even sure what to remove. Anyone
have some ideas to make this as easy as possible? Any photos?
Thanks
Ron
