The EC2 opens an injector by switching on a transistor which connects
the injector lead to ground. 12V is supplied to the other side of the
injector. If there was NO ground, it wouldn't be possible to turn on
the injectors. However, there are two pins on the EC2 that handle the
injector grounds. If it's wired up per the instructions, those two
wires are grounded to the aircraft ground near the EC2. With the EC2
ground disconnected the result would certainly be unpredictable. One
possibility is that the EC2 wasn't working at all, but the injector
transistors were providing enough conduction to hold the injectors
open. Which is what Bill said. :) There could also have been a "poor"
ground through other paths that could have resulted in unpredictable
operation.

Chris, Since the fuel was a puddle, it [obviously-probably] formed during the time you were cranking, with the ground disconnected, I have no idea how the current would flow, but I suspect that your injectors were being held open, and dumping fuel into the engine, where no fire because of EC-2 not having ground. I had a primary injector that was held open by the BMA tach, and would get fuel dumping from that until I corrected that problem. Then you reconnected and it ran on B, poor on A, as someone suggested, your MAP may have been corrupted on A -- pure speculation on my part.
