The side housings were lapped and were within specs.  I tried to get the oil springs installed correctly but at this point I'm double guessing everything.

I bet Lynn or Leon could tell us what happens when you put the springs in backwards.  I'm sure they've "heard of" someone "else" doing that :-)

I will check the oil vent line for mist and run a pressure check on the coolant. Anyone have a cheap way do that--local Auto Zone, etc stores don't have a
pressure tester to rent.

If you don't have access to a traditional pressure tester, you could pressurize the system via some other convenient point like a temp sensor hole, water heater outlet, etc.  If you could rig a tire valve on a hose, with a gauge, then you could pump it to whatever your pressure cap will hold, and watch it.

I  put about four ounces in four gallons of gas and have the metering pump
if it is working.  Thanks for the suggestions.

One ounce per gallon is plenty, and extra "might" cause the smoking.  I'd consider disabling the metering pump temporarily just to make sure it isn't adding additional oil.  If that's not it, I'm afraid you'll be going back in the engine.

Good luck,

Rusty
