Listers:
I lowered the thrust line about 2 inches and moved the alternator to the right side of the engine to clear the cowl. I have not made the cowl yet - and am concerned about getting the cooling inlets sized right. The positioning of the radiators, the "wedge" duct and the engine mount design were all inspired by the work of the "gentleman of the other list" and I thank him for the help.
I was concerned whether air would flow through the radiators without an exit duct below. Lamar has held that the radiators should be located far enough out from the prop hub to be in an area of good airflow. Apparently that is good advice. I intend to make the air intake shaped similar to that on a P-51 or a C-130 nacelle. I'll expand the duct to the greatest extent possible, using the ratio Ed Anderson has written about . Gaylen
Hi Gaylen,
Congradulations! A great looking installation. If I were starting
today, would hang the radiator underneath and exhaust as far out
to starboard as possible and stay inside cowl. Did you lower the
thrust line or is the 8 that much taller on the cowling than the
9? Were all your runs with the cowling off. Hopefully you will
not have my experience when you add the cowl. I can't get the
water up to temp with cowl off, but am margiinal with cowling on.
