A Pan Am (the new Pan Am) crew of three were recently rescheduled to exceed
16 hours on duty. The captain questioned the legality and was told by his
professional scheduling department and chief pilot that it was legal. The captain refused the assignment anyway and was fired by Pan Am. The
first officer and the engineer continued on. They were later presented
with FAA violations for exceeding on duty time limitations.
The point is that there are often conflicting inputs and grey areas. It is
our job above all to fly safe or not at all. What would you have done?
