Curtis,  I painted my gear wells using a multi color spatter trunk paint made by "plasti-kote" from the local auto parts store and I DID NOT prime the surface.  I also asked the parts store to order the clear coat  (also made by plasti-kote, p/n 505 Clear Acrylic) for extra protection.  So far, after two hundred hours flight time, it's been holding up quite well.  BTW, I used the same sure on the inside of my canopy.  Rick Argente
