Hey Ron,
Several parts in the answer to your question...
"I've been told by 2 different LNCE builders that the standard cowling does
not leave enough cooling air exhaust around the exhaust pipes(using
IO-550)."
The exhaust pipes that I recently (about 6 months ago) bought from Lancair,
differ significantly from those pictured in their earlier catalog (read
"they have changed"). The last 18" or so of the pipes appear to be of a
larger diameter, also there is a muff on each side as opposed to the earlier
model. The muffs extend below the cowl line on my installation, so I'll be
modifying my lower cowl to make a smaller Dolly Parton (Julia Roberts?)
cowl. I'm going to be tackling this soon, perhaps this weekend. I'll send
pics to you if you like. This is part 1.
Part 2. Being absolutely insane (well known, as I tackled building an
airplane) I'm toying with the idea of turbo normalizing my plane once it
gets some hours on it (have to tackle the "approved modification"
interpretation later I guess). I spoke to someone during the past fly-in
regarding this. His suggestion was to change to the IV cowl as it has larger
nostrils for cooling (hence the standard ES cowl top and VI lower won't
match). Also I believe the VI cowl is wider to accommodate the intercoolers.
Hope this helps.
Pat
