Theo: for what it is worth, here is my procedure for the overhead.
1. Get approval from the tower
2. They will usually tell you to report "initial" about 2 miles from the
runway
3. Get set up on stabilized approach on runway heading about 3-4 miles
from the runway--pattern altitude/220kts/18-20"MP/2500rpm/mix full rich/fuel
on fullest tank/seat belts tight/practice valsalva and calf tightening
maneuver/set HSI needle to runway heading (tower will usually call the right
or left break, and cleared to land)
4. At midfield: Throttle to 10"/left or right brisk turn with 3-G pull
to downwind/brisk roll-out to wings level to downwind (your HSI needle is
opposite direction now and vertical)/ below 172kts apprch flaps/prop full
forward/below 130kts gear/flaps down/at 100kts begin smooth180 turn to base
and final (tower approval of course)
5. Roll out on final/90kts/power as needed for Vert speed control/grease
it on/keep nose wheel off as long as possible/prepare for OOOHs/ AAAHs/
applause at the ramp!
"WARNING WILL ROBINSON"--PRACTICE THIS FIRST AT ALTITUDE, AND GET SOME
TRAINING ON THE VALSALVA MANEUVER PRIOR TO DOING IT--BLACKING OUT DURING THE
TURN DEFINITELY COSTS BROWNIE POINTS. ALSO, DON'T ENTER TOO SLOW--STALLING
ALSO COST BROWNIE POINTS. AT UNCONTROLLED AIRFIELDS, MAKE SURE EVERYONE IN
THE PATTERN KNOWS WHAT THE HECK YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT WITH YOUR
"OVERHEAD"--IF THEY DON'T, FORGET IT FOR THAT DAY!
