Jack, I put my com antenna just forward of the main spar with the connection under  the tunnel.  Although you probably don't need any additional ground plane other than the carbon fiber structure, I did put a 12 in. x 12 in aluminum tape on the fuselage floor under the antenna mount.  Works as my no. 1 com(GNS 430), receiving and transmitting just fine.  My no.2 is the enternal vert. stab, which works fine, too.  I had the aluminum tape (6 in. width) left over from a heat duct job.  You should be able to get this at most any heating supply store.  I used the same setup you did for my KT76C digital transponder, and ATC is picking me up fine.
