GPS direct is usually a shorter "great circle" distance than flying VOR airways.

I don't often post but I will note in reference to the subject line that when I flew the ES to OSH in 2011, the first leg was five hours burning 60 gallons leaving 42 in the tanks. The trip was via V6 from CCR CA to MBW then V100 to Scotts Bluff Nebraska.  From there stll on V100 to SUX then on to someplace in Wisconsin.  Can't remember the name of the town.  So, the tanks aren't all that small at 102 gallons.
