Back in the days when Airbus Industrie dreamt up the A320 FBW etc, There were two items going to be on the checklist: START….and….STOP.
The computers via ECAM etc were going to look after everything.
It was then thought that didn’t give the boys at the sharp end much to do, so they thought,”better give these numb nuts (cerebrally speaking) something to do to make it look like they are actually required”
So the Checklist was extended with extraneous stuff.
But, my Lancair doesn’t have ECAM. I NEED a checklist. Not for extended post T/O ops, but for Pre-Start and Pre T/O vital actions. Then I chuck it out and use memory because the extraneous stuff isn’t necessary.
The most critical point for a serious problem is from the start of the T/O roll to 1500 feet. After that I’ve got room to manoeuvre to at least some degree.
Anecdote: I am reminded of a day some forty years ago, as a B727 F/O flying with a serious Check Captain, and being give a 350 kt descent with a requirement to hold the speed as long as possible to join final from a close base.
He to whom I showed kowtowing respect was flying, a beautiful clear day, landed, turned off the high speed taxiway, and called for after landing checklist, which elicited the response from the Flight Engineer: “Sir, would you like the descent and pre-landing checklists first?”
