I use an iPad 3 in my personal life and for back-up in my airplane (backs up my 696). Here are my randomly organized thoughts:

1. I love my iPad. Being able to acces email, weather, internet almost anywhere is fantastically nice, and having a decent keyboard (not a phone) is a huge plus, as is the fact it fires up instantly (unlike most notebooks).

2. Personally, I don't like the iPad keyboards, as I do fine with the on-screen one and don't like the amount of real-estate required by a separate keyboard (I also have a thin notebook computer I'll use if I want a real keyboard and computer).

3. Memory… you don't need a ton if you don't store several movies and gobs of photos. This moment I have 3 movies, 488 songs and 6164 photos on my 32 GB iPad, and still have 4 GB free.

4. An iPad is not necessarily a good computer replacement. It's still a pretty lame substitution for spreadsheet work or anything that has heavy use of drop down windows, drag-and-drop features, etc.

5. I flew with a buddy last weekend with his iPad mini on the yoke of his 310. The mini was EXCELLENT in that situation. There's no room in my plane to mount either a mini or regular iPad so I prefer the larger iPad. But the mini is really really really nice for single-use aviation purposes. He also had an external GPS. I think that is probably necessary for it to be a good aviation device. I'm not an expert on the various external devices, but I'd probably look for one with the ADS stuff too so I could get free weather.

At our customary Monday morning coffee fest in my hangar this AM (100 LL Java a specialty), one of the fellows brought in an Ipad 3 with aviation apps and an ultrathin Logitech keyboard cover which combined to overcome my buyers resistance.

My wife and I decided it was time to get a laptop with WiFi since we are in each other's way a lot with our single desk top computer at home. By shifting the problem statement to include aviation use as well as alternate use at home, the shift from plain vanilla el cheapo laptop to Ipad 3 plus keyboard became seamless.

So, before spending my money, I wanted to check with this group for the latest advice on Ipad3 or is the dual core 4 worthwhile?) configurations for aviation use. How much memory? (We don't plan to use it for movies or a lot of photos).

Also want to confirm a review I read that the Ipad 3 has appropriate stand alone GPS, gyros, and accelerometers to permit use of aviation apps. One of the reviews showing comparisons of various Ipads showed that Ipad 3 and 4 had GPS only in the 4 G versions, but Australian 4G is different than US which created a flap over here some time ago. I need to check to see if the 4G works in Australia.

Open to suggestions, cautions, recommendations and such.
