Using the insurance companies is a great concept and works really well with hi priced jets.

But when you consider the Lancair fleet and the current state of insurance underwriting, it doesn't work.

The most prominent reason for this is that many lancair pilots are "self-insured" or carry only liability insurance.   So while this may work for the pilot, it does nothing to help the fleet.    And the fleet is what the underwriters are looking at when they set the rates.

Then you get to the actual numbers.   The actual numbers say that if our fleet has more than one fatal a year, we are worse than all of experimental aviation.

hi there

No you are correct, no need for more FAA.
but the real police, anyway, are the insurance companies and they can do it for their own selfish interests.

Do you *really* want the FAA to step into the Experimental Amateur Built world with what's essentially a type rating requirement?  This is a first step towards setting performance and handling characteristic limits on homebuilts, and then things like the Evo and IVP disappear and you're left with TBM-700 and Piper Meridian.  Grab your wallet.

i wish that the FAA would impose something like they did to the MU2 pilots; it would keep us all safer.
