having owned an r22, extra 300 and now a pitts for fun aerobatics and have a glider rating--They're all fun.  gotta be careful in all the endeavors though admittedly helicoptering may take more constant attention as it won't fly by itself ie "handsfree" as airplanes will at least for a short time.

if gliders were a viable option in WV/OH near where i live, an aerobatic glider is perhaps the most fun I have had in an hour of flight instruction time-though the extra 300 is hard to beat-oh and the lancair is great fun as was the R22-hmmmm so much to do so little time and money!

Do what floats your boat at the time and Enjoy and be safe.

I have a friend that is a pilot and a mechanical engineer/metallurgist.
He summed up the situation with this:

Airplanes barely work.
Helicopters don't work.

aerobatics or sailplanes recommended.

Go for it if you got the cash.  I'd love to have a small helicopter for fly

If you have some money left over can you pay for my lessons too?

Good Luck with it, Jeff.
Helicopters have a tendency to shake themselves apart.  I planned to get a
helicopter add-on rating where the school had two helicopters.  They could
never keep them flying, always in maintenance.  I finally gave the idea up
after one of them had a hard landing on the back of the skids and the main
rotor cut the tail rotor off.
Helicopters are best flown by entities with deep pockets in my opinion.

I've been getting the itch to do something different.  Anyone have advice
about taking helicopter lessons?  There's a Bell 47 trainer nearby with a
small flight school.

Perhaps our Lancair family can render comment (either way).
