Subject: New Hydraulic Pump Report

The hydraulic pump on 235N was replaced recently with a new pump from Lancair. The previous pump was from the late 1980's/early 90's and sat on the shelf unused for almost 20 years. After a few hours of flight time the pump began short cycling several times in a row after the gear was retracted. Using the trouble shooting method previously described in the LML, it was determined that the hydraulic pressure loss was coming from the pump itself. A decision was made to purchase a new pump and worry about rebuilding the old pump later. Despite the long wait time for the pump to arrive, the performance of the the new pump is nothing short of amazing. Both mains retract simultaneously followed immediately by the nose gear. The gear retracts in less than half the time as the old pump and is much quieter. In fact, you can't hear the gear motor at all while flying. Gear down is really fast also. This is all probably normal fare for you Legacy flyers, but it is a big improvement over the slow and loud gear motor of the old days!
