True – Adam and all of us should get initial and recurrent training from an instructor (not necessarily a test pilot) to insure we are competent and current in our respective a/c. That instructor needs to be one who is completely familiar with the a/c involved. LOBO is an excellent source of such folks. However, that being said, the more copilot time you can amass, especially if you’re doing the flying , prior to or concurrent with that initial flight, the more you will likely get out of that initial “official” training.
I suspect you’re saying that Adam and others should not substitute flying around with a friend in his Legacy for serious syllabus training and for checkout or for insurance requirements. I would agree with that.
Additionally, unless the owner has LOTS of hours in type, and familiarity with dealing with any and all emergencies, he would be very smart to hire a test pilot for the first flight – maybe the first few hours of flight.

John Barrett

Do yourself a favor and hire a real test pilot. If you must you can then have the test pilot check you out in your plane so you can fly off the time.
I received 6.5 hours of dual last October at the LOBO fly-in in Branson. It’s been four months so I’d like to brush up before my first flight. Is there anyone in the area who wouldn’t mind taking me up for an hour or so? I’d like to do some takeoffs, slow flight, pattern work, and approaches to landing. I’m comfortable flying from either seat. I live on Long Island , New York . You can contact me on or off list.
