I bought my MT constant speed (hydraulic) prop several years ago...
Rob,
You should check if you have the O-ring seal modification in the hub. I
bought my prop in 1999, I think. After about 400 hours, it started throwing
a lot of grease from the blade O-ring seals at the hub. When the prop shop
disassembled it, I could see and feel a groove that had warn into the soft
aluminum hub where the O-ring seats. MT's fix was to machine and press in a
stainless steel sleeve. The fix did not add any cost to the 6-year overhaul,
which was about $3K in 2005. I'm not sure when the stainless steel insert
became standard equipment.
The 6-year MT overhaul includes sanding the blades down and inspecting the
wood for cracks under the composite covering. After that the blades are
refinished and come back looking like new. If you have damage to the
stainless leading-edge inserts, they are also replaced, but that adds cost.
Mine did not have to be replaced in 2005. Of course, they also inspect the
hub, bearings, re-grease, and replace the o-rings.
