Jay,

Its been said before but bears repeating.  Practice slow flight, know your plane, study the procedures to get you into Sun & Fun.  Know your limits and don't let the controllers tell you how to fly your plane.  If you get behind another plane (cessna or J3 or any other slower plane) whose pilot did not read and understand the notams, has his flaps hanging and is flying at a speed that makes you uncomfortable or that you are overtaking, what are you going to do?  Make that decision now.  Another example,  if you were to hear controllers say that you need keep your down wind tight, will you be able to safely turn base to final without a stall spin situation developing?  Just remember that you are flying that plane and you must make decisions that keep you safe.  If necessary you must be able to make the decision to break it off and go around.  Yes, that might mean going back out to start all over again so be sure that you have enough fuel on board.   Study the Notams and have a plan so that you know where you will go if you have to abort and start over again.  Bottom line is be prepared and don't get pressured into doing anything you are uncomfortable with.

Jay:

I would say that it depends on your comfort level and if you are flying solo.  Having flown into Sun ‘n Fun for the past 10 years I have seen a few interesting things, some of which I would rather like to avoid in the future.  If you want to arrive on the 13th a co-pilot or good lookout can be valuable as some pilots come into the pattern as they please with zero communication and or no clue of what they should be doing. Read the arrival information and be sure you are clear on the procedures.

Since this is your first visit to this great event, I would suggest going early.  There will be much less congestion mid day on the 12th.  In any event I believe you will enjoy Sun ‘n Fun.  Flying in and spending a few days on the field is always memorable.

Subject: [LML] Sun and Fun

I’m planning my first trip to Sun and Fun and have a question for you SnF veterans.

I’m starting from the Pacfic Northwest so plan on taking a day and a half to get there rather than arriving after dark. The event starts on Tuesday, April 13th. Would it be better to leave a day early and arrive mid-day on the 12th, or is an arrival during the show on the 13th OK?

Thanks,

Jay Phillips
