I like the specific region approach. early is
better. somebody must make a multi-zone temp head that would work
well. I happened to have an excess edm-700 so that is what I used.
(6 probes). it is amazing how "local" some issues can be, prior to
ignition. ....and if you can find it prior to ignition, that's a
good thing.
If anyone is interested in the temp sensing tapes,
one product is at
I used these to measure temps in the exhaust
tunnel after acquiring an exhaust pipe that guided the exhaust somewhat
closer to the fuselage. they worked well but they only go to 500
dF. Google search found some other similar products.
Maybe they go higher.

I agree- finding a suitable temperature
range in a specific location would be difficult with the engine changing
temperatures constantly as loading varied and cooling airflow changed. The
outlet would show any increase no matter what the source.
I'm thinking about point sources like
exhaust joints or turbochargers affecting nearby hoses. There are temperature
indicating tapes that could be placed to determine what the normal
temperatures might be. It might be possible to choose a fuse that would blow
when the hose first became exposed rather than allowing failure to create an
alarm at the outlet. -Bill
