Happened to run across this in an AOPA daily email Q&A section. Since about 1995 I've always used "LNC 2" as my type designator when ATC asks and they've never fussed. Anyone on the list know more about this?

Question: I want to file a flight plan for a flight in my homebuilt experimental aircraft. What type designator do I use?




Answer: The FAA's Air Traffic Controller's Handbook (7110.65N) outlines the various aircraft make/model designators. Appendix C lists designators for experimental or homebuilt aircraft as HXA, HXB, or HXC, for aircraft with a cruise speed of 100 knots or less, 100 through 200 knots, or more than 200 knots, respectively.
