I agree with Jim's assessment:
While turbo normalizing the ES would be useful for some of us, turbo
charging it to 350 hp as the TSIO 550 does seems a bit of overkill unless
you plan to routinely fly out of high elevation airports and need the power.
I know that's been a factor for at least one builder I know. It's an
expensive proposition, to be sure.
If higher altitudes and speeds are all you're after, I think your
TSIO-550 should be hung on a IV or IV-P. The same engine on either of the
retracts would give you about 100 kts over a Super ES. To fly the ES
another 20-25 kts above what you'd get from a 300 hp engine is pushing the
envelope a bit and as Jim said, CG becomes a lot more critical.
The Super ES is already overpowered compared to most of the competition.
To add the steroids a turbo represents could be dangerous if you're not
careful. That's my .02 worth.
