Now that the Columbia 300 seems destined to have a turbo option, and I've
heard of one ES that's been converted to the TSIO and another builder
planning the same, I'm wondering what the thoughts are amongst the LML folks
about the wisdom of putting the TSIO in the ES? My rough calculations are
that it would add about $25K to the total cost for about 20 or 25 kts more
speed, plus the higher altitude capability.
It also strikes me that it would put the experimental label in bold caps,
since, so far as I know, there has not been any testing of the ES at the
higher airspeeds or higher altitudes. The weight and balance would also
become an issue, as the ES tends to be nose-heavy even with the IO-550-G2B
engine installed.
I've queried the tech staff at the Lancair works, and am waiting for a
reply. I do know they fooled around with a turbo-normalized setup a couple
of years ago, but dropped it for reasons that were never entirely clear.
Opinions?
