I agree that flying is often a complicated and taxing endeavor.  That is
exactly why eliminating certain non-required activity is so important.  Most
pilot error accidents don't happen in cruise - they happen when pilot
work-load is heaviest.  Wouldn't it be nice to eliminate some of the pilot
work-load via automation?  Let's let the pilot focus his/her attention on
flying the plane, maintaining headings/altitude, communicating, and
observing surroundings.
