Why would it have been a bad idea to land with the main gear out and hold the nose off for as long as possible?

Check to see if any of the screws/nutplates for the nose gear door can make contact with the nose wheel.  I removed the last couple of nutplates in that long hinge soon after I started flying for this very reason.
