Noting
Bob was based in Ubon Thailand, I was (easily) reminded that my newly appointed
flight commander boss in 1965 was sent there on a six month detachment as CO of
the Admin (Base Squadron) with the RAAF before he took up his permanent posting
at our Squadron. The RAAF had F-86 Sabres there at the same time Bob would have
been based before being a guest at the Hilton in Hanoi.
I
remember the period well ‘cos the deputy flight commander, in order to
ingratiate himself with our new boss, decided we junior officers would take
over the lawn care of the married quarter assign to the new boss on the base.
It was done on a roster basis, which turned out that the schedule always fell
to the most junior of the juniors- namely me.
The
boss returned after his six month detachment, and I am still waiting for the
boss and his missus to acknowledge my superlative efforts. Gee – it’s
44 years – do you think they’ll remember?
Heh
Heh!

Bob was the gear up landing principal in a recent
post. Here is a little background on Bob if you think it is worthy of
putting on the LML. He was shot down on December 20, 1965.
