Unfortunately nose wheel shimmy is powerful enough to rip the mount apart. Often times this leads to a bent prop, but not always. Nose strut maintenance is absolutely critical. If neglected it is just a matter of time before one will experience a shimmy. The most basic things to check are fluid level, internal leaks, and damping force.
Also, a loose fitting strut, as well as, too little bearing friction will contribute to shimmy.
