OK,  so I do not know the difference between a teardown and an overhaul. The shop called it an "IRAN" actually.. I really wanted to make the point that when a piece of rotating  machinery is damaged by hitting a fixed object a teardown should be considered mandatory.  Ask Lycoming.  I believe they have a new standard and even long grass is included. When mine was torn down a crack was found in the radius between the propellor flange and the journal.  The crank had undergone NDT 300 hours earlier and it was felt that the crack had been missed as it was not a new crack.  I hate to think what would have happened had that crack propagated to failure. The prop strike did me a favour in this case.

In my case $17000 fixed the engine and $10,000 fixed the prop.

I love this forum, a misery shared is a misery halved!!!

I have had 4 prop strikes 4 engine teardowns, 1 new crankshaft and 1  new set of exhaust valve guides. My engine has not had to be overhauled.

The last problem that I had was at 700 hours. I now have 1,600 hours  on the engine and all compression is still in the mid 70's. I do an  oil analysis every 100 hours. The analysis are all still good.

OH yes, I am a member of the "gear Up" club and I know believe  me!!!! After a prop strike an overhaul is mandatory.  Apart from  mandatory it is good common sense.
